Welcome to the Leelanau Greens Project Blog. This site will chronicle our progress in developing and utilizing our greenhouse to grow greens for our school. The Leelanau School is a small private boarding high school on the shores of Lake Michigan that strives to provide an education for its students that is interactive and experiential. Students have unique opportunities to work closely with teachers, participate in near daily field trips, and develop and implement hands-on projects. Leelanau Greens is one of those projects.
Several years ago we received a generous grant that allowed us to build a 60ft x 24ft heated greenhouse on our campus. Several faculty and staff were involved in its construction and the space has been utilized for several activities since then. It has provided a space to built our second 33ft Voyager canoe which we utilize in the fall with our senior class trip paddling the Le Cheneaux islands of Lake Huron. It has also been the location where students have designed and built several hydroponic and aquaponic systems.
Now it is time for the next step. We have consulted with a local CSA director who specializes in hoop house production and we have a plan. The days continue to get longer and we are in the throws of building raised beds to be ready for planting. So...... watch and read about our achievements and frustrations. Our mistakes and accomplishments will all be recorded here in hopes that anyone who would like to do a similar project might be able to avoid some of the costly or time consuming miss steps we take.
